Minutes of the General Meeting of the Probus Club of Nanoose Bay

Friday, September 21st, 2018

 Welcome:       Kathy Lowe in the chair welcomed everyone to the meeting at 9:15 am.

Members with Guests:  3 guests were introduced

Announcements:       
Kathy Lowe thanked Bob & Melba Nelson for the setup and door duties.                                  Thanks as well to Marianne & Dick Duffley and Lauren & Laurie Sadler for performing kitchen duties today.

Opening Remarks:    Kathy announced to the membership that there is to be a rent increase for the use of St Mary’s facilities.

Kathy made the following motion: 
“Be it resolved by a show of hands that in response to a request from St. Mary’s church, as a club we make a donation of $1,000.00 for their their kitchen renovations.”
Seconded by Linda Hamilton
By a show of hands it was approved by a majority of those present  – there was one against.

Minutes:   Maureen Paterson  moved that the Minutes of the last General Meeting held on Friday, August 17th , 2018 be approved as posted on the website.
Earl King seconded – carried.

Sunshine:        Lynda Ingram reported that one card had been sent out.
September birthday celebrants were recognized.

Communications:       No report

Membership:        Ron Commander reported our membership still stands at 200 members, with 9 people on a waiting list to join. An updated membership list will be sent out shortly.

Special Interest Groups:       A lot of the SIGs that were on hiatus for the summer are now scheduling for the fall – please see the website for details.

 Pub Lunch:     Jean Candey announced there will be no Pub Lunch today due to lack of demand. She announced a wish for a new volunteer to take over the Pub Lunches.

Social Activities:  Andree Fortin  announced that The Rotary Park at Qualicum Beach has been reserved for our 2019 picnic on July 19th  

Sign up sheet for the October 10th winery tour is on the side table – Andree outlined the itinerary and the cost $100 pp – payable by cheque at the bus (Nanoose Place) – lunch to be determined.

Andree mentioned some other venue choices for the annual Christmas Party  – by a show of hands it was determined – by the majority – to keep Fairwinds as the venue for 2018 Party.

Andree is exploring the possibility of a Spring outing via Tide Rip Tours for grizzly bear watching.

Ron Windrim proposed a one day tour of the Viking Air facilities in Victoria – a sign up sheet for expression of interest is on the table. Maximum of 25 people and it has to be on a Friday.

Treasurer:      Kathy Lowe on behalf of Randy Borger reported funds available at CCCU as of September 20th, 2018:

Guest Speakers:  Tony Ransom introduced Lawyers Wendy Clifford & Nathan Seaward:
They gave a most interesting presentation of the aspects of Powers of Attorney, Representation Agreements and Medical Assistance in Dying.  They emphasized how powerful a Power of Attorney document can be and outlined the three types of POAs -General POA, Specific POA and Enduring POA.  An explanation of Representation Agreements was given and an interesting guideline as to the history of Medical Assistance in Dying in Canada.  The membership was much appreciative of this topical subject and the guest speakers’ expertise.
