Minutes of the General Meeting of the Probus Club of Nanoose Bay

St. Mary’s Church Hall

Friday, May 18th, 2018

 

Welcome:       Kathy Lowe in the chair welcomed everyone to the meeting at 9:15 am.

Members with Guests:  No guests this meeting

 Announcements:   Kathy Lowe thanked Bob & Melba Nelson for setup and door duties and  Anne Larson, Alida Sali, Randy & Judy Miller for kitchen duties. 

Minutes:  Maureen Paterson moved that the Minutes of the last General Meeting held on Friday April 20th  2018 be approved as posted on the website – Bob Nelson seconded – carried 

Sunshine:  On behalf of Lynda Ingram, Jacqui Townsend reported that only one card was sent out in May.
Members with May birthdays were recognized.

 Communications:  Ann Lawson reported that a copy of the Bulletin from Probus Canada was available on the side table and reminded everyone about the sign up sheets available on the website.

Membership: No report

Special Interest Groups: Lyn King acknowledged that several groups have a planned hiatus for   the summer.  A new SIG has formed regarding “Family Tree” – sign up sheet available on the table & the website.  Bev Watson reminded everyone about dinner theatre tickets and payment due for “Grease” .

 Social Activities : Sharon Vincent spoke about the upcoming trip to Quadra Island June 13-15th.  She reminded the participants to make sure they are signed up for the various activities. 
NB:  check- in at the resort is not till 3 pm June 13th – checkout 11 am June 15th
– on the 14th – golf is a shotgun starting at 10 am
 – hospitality suite (byob) – David and Jean Russell
–  Bob and Carol-Ann Faulkner are coordinating the hiking
–  Bob & Melba Nelson are coordinating the kayaking
–  whale watching tour – your own arrangements
–  wine tour – your own arrangements
–   info centre close to the ferry at Campbell River

 Andree Fortin spoke to the membership regarding the summer picnic to be held at the Rotary Welch Park in Qualicum Beach  on Friday July 20th – there is a sign up sheet on the table and also on the website.

The sign up sheet for the September 12th outing to the Cowichan Bay area which includes a dairy and a tea farm is on the table.

Andree mentioned a winery tour for late September with lunch – possibly charter a bus if enough interest – sign up sheet for interest is on the table.

Andree also spoke about various cruises – sign up sheets expressing an interest with trips to the Galapagos Island, Tahiti or Europe are on the table and on the website. 

Kathy Lowe and Lyn King will be attending the meeting for the mid-island Probus groups in June and will explore with the other clubs the possibility of joining together for these cruises.

Ann Lawson mentioned Bard on the Beach – Saturday matinees for Macbeth (Aug 11th) & As You Like it (Aug 18th) – full details are on the website .

 Treasurer:  Randy Borger reported that as of  May 18th, 2018 funds available at CCCU are:
High Interest Account:  $3,693.17
Chequing Account:        $4,551.76

 Guest Speaker:  Anne Larson introduced our guest speaker:  Dr Hannah Wilson – she is a professor at the Vancouver Island University in the Geography Department.  Dr Wilson has a Bsc in Physical Geography, an Msc in Climatology and Geographic Information Systems and a PhD in Remote Sensing and Spatial Statistics.  Hannah is the daughter of a meteorologist and has  an in depth knowledge regarding our local weather patterns.  Hannah gave us a very interesting talk about the science of weather patterns – why we get the weather we get – and noteworthy weather events.  Of particular note was the amount of information gleaned from the local weather station from the roof of Nanoose Bay Elementary School – part of the Vancouver Island weather station network – in operation since 2007.  This was a fascinating, informative and professional presentation much appreciated by our membership.

Club Lunch:  Jean Candey is away – luncheon is cancelled for today.
