General Meeting Minutes October 20 2017

Minutes of the General Meeting of the Probus Club of Nanoose Bay
St. Mary’s Church Hall
9:15 a.m. Friday, October 20, 2017

 Welcome:      
Ron Windrim in the chair welcomed everyone to the meeting, and commented on the large turnout.

Members with Guests:         
Ann Lawson introduced 2 guests this morning.  Wayne Newport introduced his guest who was formerly the president of the Nanaimo Probus Club.  In total, there were 8 guests introduced this morning.

Announcements:      
Ron thanked Alida and Pat Sali for setup and door duties (filling in for Bob and Melba Nelson).

Thanks also went to our Kitchen Duty crew – Bill MacMillan, Lynda Ingram, Leslie Horsman and Linda Hamilton.

Ron pointed out that a sign-up sheet for Kitchen Duty starting in January is now available, and urged volunteers to consider helping out.

Minutes:        
In Maureen’s absence, Judie Taylor moved that the Minutes of the General Meeting held September 15, 2017 be approved as posted on the website.  Tony Ransom seconded.  Carried.

Treasurer:     
Carolyn Dodd reported that as of October 19, 2017 funds available at CCCU are:

  • High Interest Account $3,687.65
  • Chequing Account $2,897.49

Social Activities:        
Ann Lawson, in place of Lorene Kehoe, updated us on the status of up-coming activities.

  • Shelter Point Distillery and Farm tour will take place Thursday, Nov. 2 at 11:00 am. Sandwiches will be provided at a cost of $9.20 pp. Please use the Web sign-up sheet.
  • Christmas Party will take place December 7th at Fairwinds. Cost is $45 for members and $60 for guests.  Organization is underway with many volunteers helping out.
  • Trivia Night is in the planning stages, with the theme of Nurture & Nature. More details to follow.

Communications:     
Ann also reported the website is working very smoothly.  She thanked the members for using the Web sign-up facility, and also thanked special interest groups for providing photos and write-ups of their activities.

Sunshine:       
Jacqui Townsend reported that no cards had been sent out this month.  Jacqui also asked the October Birthday members to stand up and be recognized.

Membership:             
Kathy Lowe reported in the absence of Lyn King.  Our membership is now full at 200 people.  One new member, Cheryl Jansen, received her membership pin today.

Special Interest Groups:      
Kathy Lowe invited leaders of the special interest groups to present information on their meetings and activities.  Full details and contact information are available on the website.

  • Book Club #1 has posted a list of titles of books they will be reading this year. See Updates.
  • Dinner Theatre – Sun. October 29th , 2:00pm. Dinner to follow at Fox and Hound in Ladysmith.
  • Fringe Flicks – Sun. October 29th,, 4:00 pm followed by optional dinner.
  • Garden Club – Sign up for Christmas wreath/table centre piece workshop Dec. 4 at Nanoose Library.
  • Les Wineaux – Next event is Nov. 22 . Contact Tony Ransom for details.
  • OpinionaTED – Oct. 26 at Horsman’s home.“The Revolutionary Power of Diverse Thought.”

Guest Speaker:         
Jenny Ransom introduced Eiko Jones, Professional Photographer, as our guest speaker today.  Eiko discovered his passion for nature photography while still in his teens in New Zealand, and this further evolved into a focus on coastal landscapes during extensive trips along the west coast of BC and Alaska.  His techniques above and below the waterline capture the unique colours and angles in his own dramatic style. We were treated to a wonderful display showing colours and lighting in the ocean as well as in marshes and rivers. 

Tony Ransom thanked Eiko for his presentation, and for showing us how important the health of the watershed is for all life.

Club Lunch
Jean Candey announced today’s lunch will be at Piper’s Pub in North Nanaimo.
