General Meeting Minutes September 15 2017

Minutes of the General Meeting of the Probus Club of Nanoose Bay
St Mary’s Church Hall
9:15 a.m. Friday, September 15, 2017

 Welcome:  Ron Windrim in the chair welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked today’s catering crew: Steve & Melissa Koehle and Ron & Andrea Commander
 Members with Guests: Jean Russell introduced her guests:  Shirley & Alan Bays
                                                 Lyn King introduced her guests:  Jane Marshall & Don Thiessen

 Minutes:  Maureen Paterson moved to approve the minutes of the August 18th 2017 general meeting as posted on the website – seconded by Barb Hunt – carried.

 Treasurer:  Carolyn Dodd reported that as of September 15, 2017 funds available at CCCU are:
 High Interest Account:  $3,686.74
 Chequing Account:          $3,341.29

Carolyn outlined the new mandatory requirements for rental of St Mary’s Hall  – the new Sexual Misconduct Policy required by the BC Diocese and also that our commercial liability insurance is more than adequate

 Social Activities:  Lorene Kehoe is assisting Andree Fortin for the time being, along with Ann Lawson. Lorene spoke about the upcoming Happy Appy Hour at the Rusted Rake. It will be held on November 9th  (price and time to be decided) – sign up sheet is on the side table.

Approximately a dozen volunteers have signed up to help with the Xmas Party (December 7th) – there will be an organizational meeting in late October. 

Sunshine:  Jacquie Townsend reported that no cards or flowers were sent since the last general meeting.  14 September birthdays were announced.

 Special Interest Groups:

Kathy Lowe invited representatives of the special interest groups to present information on their meetings and activities –full details and contact information are available on the website.

 Some notable information is as follows:

Fringe Flicks starts September 24th – schedule is posted on the website
Next Dinner Theatre is October 29th – sign up sheet available
Concerts & Classics:  restarting with 2 programs – NY Met live broadcast & a piano recital – sign up sheets for carpooling – tickets are individually purchased
Garden Club:  Cranberry farm field trip on September 26th and sign-up sheets available for the wreath/table center piece  making (require $16 at next meeting)
Kayaking Club will be having a meeting in October to plan some overnight trips for next year.  Tony & Jenny Ransom have offered the use of their kayaks in return for storage.
Les Wineaux group had a successful field trip to the Okanagan.
Men’s Coffee & Discussion Group is now at the Rusted Rake and changing to weekly – Tuesdays at 9 am

Communications:  Ann Lawson reminded everyone that a calendar for the special interest groups and all club events is on the website.  She encouraged photos to be sent in about the groups’ activities.

 Membership:  Lyn King reminded everyone (especially the snowbirds) to renew their membership for next year – details are on the website (under operations heading) – cheques to be made out to Probus Club of Nanoose Bay.  There are several new members but no badges handed out today.

 Guest Speaker:
Bob Bevis introduced and thanked our guest speaker today – Patrick Evans – founder and owner of the Shelter Point Distillery.
We were treated to a short information video and a lively and informative question and answer period. Patrick explained the history and workings of the distillery and brought a couple of samples for our upcoming Xmas party. Most of the information about the distillery is on their website www.shelterpoint.ca  – it was noted that the distillery is open for tours. The membership thoroughly enjoyed the presentation.
