General Meeting Minutes February 16 2018

Minutes of the General Meeting of the Probus Club of Nanoose Bay

St. Mary’s Church Hall

9:15 a.m. Friday, February 16, 2018

 Welcome:       Ron Windrim in the chair welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Members with Guests:  3 guests were introduced this morning.

 Announcements:       Ron Windrim thanked Melba & Bob Nelson for setup and door duties and Bo Hakanson, Finola Raynor, Bill & Linda Hamilton for kitchen duties.

 Opening Remarks:  Ron Windrim reminded everyone about next month’s AGM.
He called for volunteers to help with Social Activities and stand-ins for SIG  co-ordinators for when they are away.                               
Volunteers are needed for kitchen duties at the June 22nd general meeting which is a week later than the usual scheduled meeting since a good number of our membership will be away on the trip to Quadra Island on June 15th.

Minutes:  Maureen Paterson moved that the Minutes of the last General Meeting held on Friday, January 19, 2018 be approved as posted on the website – Bob Faulkner seconded – carried 

Sunshine:        Lynda Ingram reported that no cards or flowers were sent out in February.
Members with February birthdays were recognized.

 Treasurer:      Carolyn Dodd reported that as of January 31st, 2018 funds available at CCCU are:  High Interest Account                        $3,691.38
                     Chequing Account                  $4,928.02

Communications:  Ann Lawson remindered the SIGs to send her photos and short descriptions of their activities.  She also pointed out the benefits of the electronic sign up sheet format that is available on the website.

Membership:  5 new members were introduced and given their badges.

Special Interest Groups: Reports from the various groups were presented to the membership.
Some notables were:   Book Exchange now has a new volunteer co-ordinator
Dinner Theatre – sign up sheets for April  & May performances are available         
Fringe Flicks – sign up sheet available on the website
Nine & Dine – sign up sheet available on the website.

Social Activities Chair:  Andree Fortin mentioned a sign-up sheet is available for the summer picnic committee.

Berwick on the Lake has sent a communication regarding their spring & summer events – sign up sheet available

Jean Russell reported that the trip planned for Quadra Island – June 13th – 15th is fully booked but will take a waitlist in case of cancellations.

Guest Speaker:         
Bob Faulkner introduced our guest speaker – Jackie Hildering and her topic The Return of the Humpback Whales.
Jackie is a biology teacher, cold-water diver, underwater photographer and Humpback Whale researcher living in Port McNeil.  She co-foundered the Marine Education & Research Society and has served as a marine naturalist and naturalist trainer for a wide variety of audiences.  Her presentation today focused mainly on the Humpback Whales and their increasing numbers off the BC coast.  She touched on various topics such as:
-photos for identifying the whales
-the different feeding methods
-safety for both whales and humans
She will be giving a more detailed presentation tonight Feb 16th at Nanoose Place.
This was a most interesting and informative talk – Jackie is an excellent speaker and the membership thoroughly enjoyed her presentation.

Club Lunch:  Jean Candey announced today’s lunch will be at the Longwood Pub in Nanaimo

Attendance:                85 Members, 3 Guests, 1 Speaker.

Next Management Meeting:   March 1st at Ron Windrim’s home

Final Announcements:  Carolyn Dodd asked the membership if they knew of anyone who could speak Arabic – to help out with a local refugee family.

AGM is March 16th when a new Management Committee is voted on – watch the website for details.
