General Meeting Minutes August 17 2018

Minutes of the General Meeting of the Probus Club of Nanoose Bay
 St. Mary’s Church Hall
 Friday, August 17th, 2018

 Welcome:       Kathy Lowe in the chair welcomed everyone to the meeting at 9:15 am.

Members with Guests:  4 guests were introduced

Announcements:       
Kathy Lowe thanked Bob & Melba Nelson for the setup and door duties.                                  Thanks as well to Sheila Durnin, Sandra MacDonald, Doug & Leslie Horsman for performing kitchen duties today.

Opening Remarks:    Kathy announced and read out to the membership a Notice of Motion:
  “Be it resolved by a show of hands that in response to a request from St. Mary’s church, as a club we make a donation of $1,000.00 for their their kitchen renovations.”
This motion will be presented at the September 21st , 2018 general meeting and voted on then.

A short discussion as to the worthiness of this donation plus the finances available – further discussion to be at the next meeting.

Minutes:   Maureen Paterson  moved that the Minutes of the last General Meeting held on Friday, June 22nd , 2018 be approved as posted on the website.
Jim Watson seconded – carried.

Sunshine:        Lynda Ingram reported that no cards have been sent out  recently.
July & August birthday celebrants were recognized.

Communications:       Photos from the Broken Islands kayak trip and the picnic are on the website.

Membership:        Ron Commander reported our membership now stands at 200 members, with 7 people on a waiting list to join.  No new members can be accepted until our numbers go down to 199 members, since 200 is our official limit.

Special Interest Groups:       A lot of the SIGs that were on hiatus for the summer are now scheduling for the fall – please see the website for details.
Of Note:  New groups:  Jo Graham is starting a BYOBook group – sign up sheet on the table
Bob Bevis -interest in a genealogy group – sign up sheet on the table

Pub Lunch:     Jean Candey announced the Pub Lunch today is at the Lanztville Inn following this meeting.

Social Activities:  Andree Fortin will be leading the Winery tour in the fall (it is fully subscribed)  
Kerstin Fredriksson is leading the Sept 12th tour to the Dairy Farm  – Lunch  – then the Tea Farm – she highlighted the itinerary – this is fully subscribed.

President Kathy Lowe mentioned that we are looking for a volunteer to take over the Social Activities Chair position.

Treasurer:      Randy Borger reported funds available at CCCU as of August 16, 2018:
High Interest Account:           $3,696.87
Chequing Account:                 $4,040.61
He reaffirmed our non-profit status and reassured the membership that with operating costs per year at around $6500 – there is money available for the donation to St Mary’s church.

Guest Speaker:  Bob Bevis introduced our guest speaker Jeff Ross – talking about buying and selling gold & silver.  Jeff Ross along with his wife Joan are the owners of Gold/Silver Guy and have 4 stores –  in Nanaimo, Duncan, Port Alberni & Qualicum.
Jeff talked about how interest in stamp and coin collecting was very popular in the past but not for the new generations. At his stores various items are appraised and purchased – he often gives appraisals free of charge. He promoted the idea of using precious metals as commodities in one’s investment portfolio. Jeff brought along several samples of currencies and talked about their worth and oddities.
There were lots of questions – the membership was very appreciative of this very interesting presentation.
